Admiral Beatty's scouting force of the Grand Fleet included four large, new battle cruisers led by his flagship Lion, followed by two of the earlier Indefatigable class. These six steamed headlong into action against von Hipper's five battle cruisers which were deployed ahead of the High Seas Fleet. New Zealand, seen on the left, followed Tiger as all six swung east and then southeast, parallel to the line of the German battle cruisers, leaving their own four fast battleships lingering behind.
