In spring, Ptarmigans, denizens of the high tops of the Scottish Highlands, moult from their pure white, winter plumage into a cryptic, grey-brown attire that blends perfectly with their rocky surroundings. Part way through their spring moult they display a chequer-board pattern of white and grey feathers, which for me is their most interesting and attractive phase.
