This work of two French barques demonstrates the stylised technique Tuke became recognised for, of bleeding thin washes of colour into an already wet surface. Whilst this work represents the immediacy and treatment of light synonymous with impressionist painting, Tuke maintains an accurate rendering of the ship and rigging.
