Richard Ernst Eurich, RA, RSMA 1903-1992
Born and raised in Bradford, North Yorkshire, he settled in the south after studying at the Slade. Eurich, however, always remained close to his northern roots and based a large number of works on Yorkshire subjects - in particular Whitby, which was a childhood holiday location. The fishing port has long held significance not only for tourism but as the harbour from which Captain Cook set sail to Australia in 1768. More recently the town has provided inspiration for literary works, television and cinema, most notably Bram Stoker's Dracula.
This work, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1963, takes a viewpoint from the west, looking across to the lighthouses on the east and west piers. The slightly naive quality of the work contrasts well with the portrayal of a stereotypical day at the English seaside; a grey overcast sky, a freezing cold, choppy sea but yet a busy beach of unfazed tourists all enjoying themselves.
