Cowes Castle, a round blockhouse, was built in 1539 as part of Henry VIII's sea defences. In the 19th Century, it became Lord Anglesey's residence, then captain of the castle and a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. Following his death and that of his successor, Lord Raglan, the castle was decommissioned. In 1858, it became the permanent home of the Royal Yacht Squadron which continues to this day.
