Nicholas Matthew Condy British, 1818-1851
Mount Edgcumbe House was the former home of the Earls of Edgcumbe. The gardens comprise 865 acres of the Rame peninsula in South East Cornwall. The Barn pool was a sheltered deep water anchorage and has a rich history, from Viking moorings to American troops embarking for the D-Day landings. The most noteworthy ship that dropped its anchor here was perhaps HMS Beagle in 1831, with Charles Darwin aboard, waiting to set off on its voyage around the world. The wreck of the Catharina Von Flensburg, a 53 ton Danish brigantine which was wrecked in 1786, also lies offshore. 'Miltons Temple' can clearly be seen to the right in the gardens of Edgcumbe, a circular Ionic temple, built in 1755. Above on the hill is perhaps 'The Folly', and artificial ruin built in 1747 also in the gardens.
