This early work by Lionel Edwards depicts an elegant woman carrying a hunting whip while riding sidesaddle through the village of Liphook. The village is located on the borders of Surrey, Hampshire, and West Sussex and became a base for Canadian troops during the First and Second World Wars. This scene was painted in 1903 when Edwards was in his mid-20s. He became the youngest member of the London Sketch Club at the age of 19 and exhibited several works at the Modern Sketch Club in 1903, including watercolours titled A hunting morn and Sugar, a painting of a woman and horse in a stable who may also be the subjects of Liphook. This work would have been painted from life on one of the artist’s many sketching trips in the countryside where he sought subjects and inspiration.
